CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA

The Cleveland Orchestra
Xian Zhang, conductor
Katia Labeque, piano
Marielle Labeque, piano

Overview

Two sisters, Katia Labèque and Marielle Labèque, return to Severance Hall to perform Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos.  This work itself is a family affair — composed for Mozart and his own sister “Nannerl” to perform, with the score including his father’s handwriting.  This concerto delights in the interplay of dialogue between the performers, with a slow movement bringing to life an intimate conversation between friends.  The concert concludes with Tchaikovsky's heroic Manfred Symphony, created of strong melodies, bursting harmonies, and stirring musical statements.

NOTE:  Semyon Bychkov, who was originally scheduled to conduct this week's concerts, is unable to travel at this time due to the stomach flu and, regretfully, has cancelled his engagement here this week.  Conductor Xian Zhang has agreed to lead these performances, with the program and supporting artists remaining unchanged.  Ms. Zhang serves as music director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra.
