Guest conductor Loras John Schissel leads the Orchestra’s 20th annual free downtown concert

Metropolitan Opera Soprano Angela Brown makes her Cleveland Orchestra debut singing music by Gershwin and a Spiritual

Pre-concert festival features Cleveland-area musicians and artists

CLEVELAND, June 15, 2009 – The Cleveland Orchestra, under the direction of guest conductor Loras John Schissel, will perform its 20th annual free Star-Spangled Spectacular community concert on Thursday, July 2, on Public Square in downtown Cleveland.

At 9:00 p.m., The Cleveland Orchestra and Loras John Schissel will perform a program of popular favorites by composers George Gershwin, Elmer Bernstein, Richard Rodgers, William Steffe, and Irving Berlin, culminating with Tchaikovsky’s “1812” Overture.

Soprano Angela Brown will make her Cleveland Orchestra debut singing “Summertime” and “Someone to Watch Over Me” both by Gershwin, and the ever-popular spiritual “He’s Got The Whole World in His Hands.”

A pre-concert festival of musical entertainment will begin at 5:00 p.m. with a diverse line-up of Cleveland-based music groups performing in the hours leading up to the Orchestra’s concert: 7 Mile Isle, Catwalk Blue, What’s Next Quartet, and the Bill Ransom Quartet. In addition to the musical performances, Tower City Center will offer a free arts festival inside the mall from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The arts festival will feature the handmade works of local and national artisans. The Cleveland Orchestra’s “Star-Spangled Spectacular Pre-Concert Festival” will be hosted by ideastream’s Dee Perry. The 9:00 p.m. concert will be broadcast live on 90.3 WCPN and WCLV 104.9 FM.
