Cello and Space – Fridays@7

The Cleveland Orchestra
Jonathan Nott, conductor
Alisa Weilerstein, cello
Dvořák: Cello Concerto
R. Strauss: Also sprach Zarathustra

This Friday@7 concert combines the power of the big theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey with the passionate music of a great concerto. Richard Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra (organ and full orchestra blasting) and the tender music of Antonín Dvořák’s cello concerto. Britain’s Jonathan Nott conducts The Cleveland Orchestra, with cellist Alisa Weilerstein.

After the concert, there’s more! Food, drink, and more great music. Internationally renowned percussionist Jamey Haddad & Friends, including hyper-accordionist Michael Ward-Bergeman, percussionists Keita Ogawa and Dylan Moffitt, along with a drum ensemble of musicians from Oberlin and the Cleveland Institute of Music, will give an electrifying performance you won’t want to miss. Plus an exclusive appearance by cellist Alisa Weilerstein for an over-the-top musical experience.

It’s Friday night and time to relax with friends. And The Cleveland Orchestra makes it happen for you. Now. New.

Alisa Weilerstein’s appearance with The Cleveland Orchestra is supported by the Malcolm E. Kenney Artist-in-Residence Fund. Ms. Weilerstein is the 2009-10 Cleveland Orchestra Artist-in-Residence.

Musically Speaking – Beyond the Score®: Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony

The Cleveland Orchestra
Bertrand de Billy, conductor
Thomas Q. Fulton, Jr., narrator
David Hansen, actor
Terence Cranendonk, actor
Andrea Chenoweth, soprano
Dvořák: Symphony No. 9 (“From the New World”)

NEW WORLD OF MUSIC – Dvořák “New World” Symphony No. 9
In 1892, Dvořák came to New York to help create a new kind of American musical language. He was intrigued by Native American drumming and African American spirituals. In the end, he used classical European forms to capture his experiences in a musical postcard home — a grand symphony “From the New World.”

Musically Speaking allows you to hear the masterpieces in a whole new way. Borrowing from the Chicago Symphony’s runaway hit Beyond the Score®, the first half features the Orchestra and a richly textured audio-visual presentation about the composer and the piece to be performed (like the best of PBS).  In the second half, you’ll hear a full throttle performance of the work in its entirety made all the more vivid by your experience in the previous 45 minutes. Get the inside story, behind the music, beyond the score.

Before the Concert: Members of The Cleveland Orchestra will perform a free prelude chamber concert for Musically Speaking ticketholders in Reinberger Chamber Hall at 2:00 p.m.

After the Concert: Stay for a casual post-concert chat and Q&A with guest artists and musicians.
