Brian Mulligan, baritone
Paul Flight, countertenor
Cleveland Orchestra Chorus
Bernstein: Chichester Psalms
Vaughan Williams: A Sea Symphony
| This song-filled concert celebrates God and nature from distinctly trans-Atlantic perspectives. Bernstein wrote Chichester Psalms, one of his most joyous works, for a British choral festival. Its successful combination of old and new sounds has made it a continuing audience favorite. Countertenor Paul Flight makes his Cleveland Orchestra debut for this celebratory work. After intermission, Chorus Director Robert Porco leads The Cleveland Orchestra, Chorus, and soloists in Vaughan Williams’s A Sea Symphony. For this grandeloquent work, Britisher Vaughan Williams set poetry from American Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass — in praise and amazement of the ocean’s majesty, power, utility, and beauty. Soprano Measha Brueggergosman returns to Severance Hall after her triumphant debut with the Orchestra singing in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in January 2007.
Concert sponsor: The J. M. Smucker Company
Concert Preview "Psalms and Symphonies", with speaker Hugh Floyd, director of choral activities, Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, begins at 7:00 p.m. and is free for all concert ticket holders.
Measha Brueggergosman's appearance with The Cleveland Orchestra is made possible by a gift to the Orchestra's Guest Artist Fund from The Kulas Foundation.
