The Cleveland Orchestra presents “Sensational Strings”
Musical Rainbow concerts on April 16 and 17
in Severance Hall’s Reinberger Chamber Hall

CLEVELAND, April 6, 2010 – Cleveland Orchestra cellist Bryan Dumm and guest violinist Molly Fung will introduce children ages 3-6 to the “Sensational Strings” in the April 16 and 17 PNC Musical Rainbow concerts, held in Severance Hall’s Reinberger Chamber Hall. Their daughter Rochelle, 17, a violinist and a senior at Hathaway Brown School, will perform with her parents during the program, which ties together musical families and the string family. Local actress and singer Maryann Nagel hosts the 30-minute, age-appropriate programs, which include narration, demonstration, short solo selections, and audience participation. This season, as part of its Grow Up Great initiative in Cleveland, PNC is sponsoring the Musical Rainbows Series for preschoolers as well as a wide range of other activities and programs designed to give very young children “A Great Early Start in the Arts.” PNC Musical Rainbow programs introduce very young children to the instruments of the orchestra, one at a time.

PARKING: For PNC Musical Rainbow concerts at Severance Hall, Standard Parking provides parking in the underground garage adjacent to Severance Hall at a special Rainbow Concert rate of $4.50 per vehicle. Clearly marked school buses and vans may park for free on the west side of East Boulevard. Metered parking is also available on some side streets near Severance Hall.
The PNC Musical Rainbow Series is part of The Cleveland Orchestra’s Community Music Initiative, a broad array of educational programs designed to foster a love of music and a lifetime of participation in the musical arts, and to provide greater access to orchestral music to more of Cleveland’s citizens than ever before. New this year, Cleveland Orchestra musicians use music to help children at local Head Start sites learn school readiness skills as part of the PNC Grow up Great program; Cleveland Orchestra musicians who are MusicMentors support school string programs in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District; and the MusicMasters program draws on the expertise of Orchestra musicians to offer clinics, masterclasses, and coaching throughout the region. Other educational programs include Cleveland Orchestra Education Concerts (which bring more than 16,000 school children to Severance Hall each year), the Learning Through Music school partnership program, Concert Previews, the Student Advantage Program for college students, Music Study Groups for adults, and several programs to nurture aspiring young musicians (Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, Youth Chorus, and Children’s Chorus). The Cleveland Orchestra
Bryan Dumm became a member of The Cleveland Orchestra in 1986 and maintains a varied career that includes solo appearances, chamber music performances, teaching, and educational outreach. He has been featured as a soloist with the Rochester Philharmonic, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, and the Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra. He has performed
throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia with a variety of small ensembles, including the Cleveland Octet, Brioso String Quartet, Ars Poetica, Amici String Quartet, and the Myriad Ensemble. He is a founding member of the Samaris Piano Trio, which is recorded on the Newport Classics label. Mr. Dumm serves on the faculties of the Cleveland Institute of Music and Cleveland State University, and has been a faculty member of the CREDO Summer Chamber Music Program since it began ten years ago. He has participated extensively in The Cleveland Orchestra’s educational programs in Cleveland and Miami and has given cello masterclasses in music schools across the country. Mr. Dumm holds bachelor and master of music degrees and a performer’s certificate from the Eastman School of Music, where he was a student of Paul Katz and Steven Doane.
Molly Fung-Dumm
Violin
Molly Fung-Dumm received her violin training at the Eastman School of Music, where she graduated with high distinction and was awarded a performer’s certificate. Her teachers have included Sylvia Rosenberg and Donald Weilerstein. Winner of the 1987 Irving Klein String Competition, she has appeared as soloist with a number of orchestras, including the Peninsula Symphony, Rochester Chamber Orchestra, and The Cleveland Orchestra. She has performed throughout the United States and abroad, including appearances in the Dame Myra Hess Chamber Music Series and at the Philips Collection in Washington D.C. She is a founding member of the Samaris Piano Trio and is currently a faculty member at Cleveland State University. Her debut compact disc recording, titled CafĂ© Music, with the Samaris Piano Trio, was released on the Newport Classics label.
