Thursday, January 6, Friday, January 7, and Saturday, January 8

Christoph von Dohnányi, who served as music director of The Cleveland Orchestra from 1984 to 2002 and became music director laureate in 2002, will lead the Orchestra in programs featuring Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Opus 74 (“Pathétique”) on Thursday, January 6 at 8 p.m.; Friday, January 7, at 11 a.m.; and Saturday, January 8, at 8 p.m. For the Thursday and Saturday concerts, the Orchestra’s Principal Horn, Richard King, will be soloist in Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 2 in E-flat major, K. 417.

The concerts open with the first U.S. performances of Jörg Widmann’s Con brio: Concert Overture. Mr. Widmann is in his second and final season as the Orchestra’s Daniel R. Lewis Young Composer Fellow. With the Young Composer Endowment Fund, the Orchestra has commissioned the award-winning composer to write a Flute Concerto featuring Principal Flute Joshua Smith as soloist. The Orchestra will present the world premiere in May 2011.

These concerts mark Mr. Dohnányi’s third engagement with The Cleveland Orchestra since he stepped down as music director in 2002.
