Release date: December 17, 2010
Sunday, January 9
The Cleveland Orchestra, under the direction of Assistant Conductor James Feddeck, will perform a Family Concert focusing on Russian ballet music and featuring a suite from Igor Stravinsky’s The Firebird on Sunday, January 9, at 2 p.m. at Severance Hall. Academy Trainees of The Joffrey Ballet and members of Cleveland School of Dance join with the Orchestra to bring to life the story of The Firebird. The ballet is based on the ancient Russian folktale of good versus evil in which a young boy, Ivan, befriends the mystical, magical Firebird.
This is the Orchestra’s second Family Concert of the 2010-11 season. In addition to the suite from The Firebird, the program includes Mikhail Glinka’s Overture to Ruslan and Ludmila, a scene from Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Dance of the Tumblers from Snow Maiden, and Sergei Prokofiev’s Dance of the Knights from Romeo and Juliet. Please note: the dancers will perform with the Orchestra in The Firebird. The Orchestra will perform the rest of the selections.
Family Concert sponsor Giant Eagle will provide free treats to audience members following the performance.
Family Concerts
One-hour Family Concerts are designed for children ages 7 and older and their families, providing an opportunity for families to spend time together while enjoying popular classical music performed by The Cleveland Orchestra in Severance Hall. - Come Dance with Us! (Reinberger Chamber Hall, entered from Smith Lobby, located on the ground floor of Severance Hall) – Members of the Cleveland School of Dance perform for the audience, and then invite audience members to dance with them onstage.
