Music Director Franz Welser-Möst conducts The Cleveland Orchestra in a program featuring Béla Bartók’s Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta at Severance Hall on Thursday, January 20, at 8 p.m. and Saturday, January 22, at 8 p.m. Pierre-Laurent Aimard will be soloist in Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 2. The program also includes a work for brass ensemble by Tōru Takemitsu titled Garden Rain, and the United States premiere of Toshio Hosokawa’s Woven Dreams. The Orchestra gave the world premiere performance of the Hosokawa work, a Roche Commission, at the Lucerne Festival in August 2010. Mr. Hosokawa is the fifth composer in the series of commissions for The Cleveland Orchestra in partnership with the Lucerne Festival, the Roche corporation, and Carnegie Hall.
Friday, January 21
For the concert on Friday, January 21, at 11 a.m., the program will consist of Takemitsu’s Garden Rain, Hosokawa’s Woven Dreams, and Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 2.
Pierre-Laurent Aimard, called “one of the most brilliant and distinctive pianists before the public today” by the Boston Globe, has appeared frequently with The Cleveland Orchestra since making his debut with the ensemble in February 1996, including performances on tour in the U.S. and Europe. Mr. Aimard served as the Orchestra’s Artist-in-Residence for two seasons, from 2007 to 2009. The Deutsche Grammophon label recently released a CD recording of the two Ravel piano concertos, recorded live by Mr. Aimard at Severance Hall concerts in February 2010 under Pierre Boulez’s direction.
This season, Mr. Aimard appears with the Orchestra in a three-week series of concerts that begins with these Severance Hall performances, continues with concerts during the Orchestra’s Indiana University Residency and Miami Residency, and culminates with a U.S. tour (February 1-6) during which he performs with the Orchestra at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor, Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Carnegie Hall in New York City, and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark.
