NEWS RELEASE

The Cleveland Orchestra performs Family Concert program
titled “The Mozart Experience” at Severance Hall on March 14

Tito Muñoz conducts program featuring Magic Circle Mime Co.

Magic Circle Mime Company

CLEVELAND, February 16, 2010 – The Cleveland Orchestra will perform its second Family Concert of the 2009-10 season on Sunday, March 14, at 2:00 p.m.  The program, titled “The Mozart Experience,” will be led by Assistant Conductor Tito Muñoz and will feature the Magic Circle Mime Company.

“The Mozart Experience” combines music and mime to introduce young audiences to the life and music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.  An impetuous street musician caught playing the orchestra’s grand piano is offered the chance (much to her surprise) to “be Mozart” for this program about one of the most famous composers of all time.  The street musician and her prankster companion lead the audience on a musical adventure that reveals the story of Mozart’s life and his musical genius.  The program includes excerpts from some of Mozart’s most famous works, including Eine kleine Nachtmusik; Papageno’s Song from The Magic Flute, with baritone Peter Bush as soloist; the third movement from Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major (“Turkish”), K. 219, with First Associate Concertmaster Peter Otto as soloist; and more.  A program listing follows.

One-hour Family Concerts are designed for children ages 7 and older and their families, providing an opportunity for families to spend time together while enjoying popular classical music performed by The Cleveland Orchestra in Severance Hall.  Each concert is preceded by fun, free, concert-related activities throughout the Hall beginning one hour prior to the performance.

Pre-Concert Activities for the “Mozart Experience” Family Concert include:

  • Instrument Discovery with Royalton Music Center (Smith Lobby on the Ground Floor of Severance Hall) – What is it like to play a violin or cello?  Can you make a sound on the flute?  How do you hold a trumpet or trombone?  Children can learn the answers to these questions discovering their “inner musician” in this hands-on music-making experience with the assistance of staff from Royalton Music Center and students from Baldwin-Wallace College.
  • The MozART Corner (Founders Gallery – Box Level) – Young artists can choose from a selection of line drawings of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in The MozART Corner.  Children can create a colorful Mozart keepsake to take home as an addition to their Severance Hall “Mozart Experience.”
  • Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra Chamber Music Groups (Reinberger Chamber Hall on the Ground Floor of Severance Hall) – Talented musicians from the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra perform a chamber music program including music by Mozart and others.

Family Concerts are sponsored by Giant Eagle.

The Cleveland Orchestra’s Family Concerts are part of its Community Music Initiative, offering a broad array of educational programs designed to foster a love of music and a lifetime of participation in the musical arts.  Families with younger children are encouraged to come to PNC Musical Rainbow Concerts for children aged 3 to 6.  New this year, MusicMentors brings Cleveland Orchestra musicians to work with selected schools in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District to support school string programs.  MusicMasters draws on the expertise of Cleveland Orchestra musicians to offer clinics, masterclasses, and coaching throughout Northeast Ohio.  Other educational programs include Cleveland Orchestra Education Concerts (which bring 25,000 school children to Severance Hall each year), the Learning Through Music school partnership program, Concert Previews, the Student Advantage Program for college students, Music Study Groups for adults, and several programs to nurture aspiring young musicians (Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, Youth Chorus, and Children’s Chorus).  For more information about any of these programs, call the Orchestra’s Department of Education and Community Programs at (216) 231-7355, or visit clevelandorchestra.com.
