Called “one of the music world’s hottest young conductors” by the Toronto Star, Spanish-born conductor Pablo Heras-Casado, winner of the 2007 Lucerne Festival Conductors’ Competition, makes his debut with The Cleveland Orchestra in a concert on Saturday, July 24, at 8 p.m. featuring Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 and Suites Nos. 1 and 2 from his countryman Manuel de Falla’s ballet The Three-Cornered Hat. Gil Shaham, whom The New York Times called “a virtuoso and a player of deeply intense sincerity” and “one of today’s pre-eminent violinists,” is soloist in Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto.

Sunday, July 25

Jahja Ling, music director of the San Diego Symphony and former Blossom Festival Director and Cleveland Orchestra Resident Conductor, returns to Blossom to lead the Orchestra in a program featuring Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with soloist Arnaldo Cohen, whom the Atlanta Constitution referred to as “a big pianist … with a roaring, muscular tone, digital precision and individual interpretations.” Also on the program for Sunday, July 25, at 7 p.m.  are Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 1 and Arnold Schnittke’s (K)ein Sommernachtstraum, which translates as (Not) A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
