CLEVELAND, May 24, 2010 – The Cleveland Orchestra, under the direction of assistant conductor Tito Muñoz, will perform “The Star-Spangled Spectacular,” its 21st annual free community concert on Public Square in downtown Cleveland on Thursday, July 1.  The concert and festival, brought to you by Cuyahoga Arts & Culture, will be hosted by ideastream’s Dee Perry.

At 9:00 p.m., The Cleveland Orchestra and Tito Muñoz will perform a program of popular favorites including Leonard Bernstein’s Overture to Candide; Aaron Copland’s “Buckaroo Holiday” and “Hoe-Down” from Rodeo; John Williams’s Olympic Fanfare and Theme, and music from Star Wars; Irving Berlin’s God Bless America; and a salute to the Uniter States Armed Forces.  The concert culminates with Tchaikovsky’s “1812” Overture and will be followed by a fireworks display, weather permitting.

Grammy-nominated and Cleveland-native violinist Caroline Goulding will perform “Summertime” from Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin, Gypsy Airs by Pablo de Sarasate, and Variations on “Yankee Doodle” by Henri Vieuxtemps with the Orchestra.  At 18, Ms. Goulding is pursuing an active solo career, performing with orchestras across the U.S. and in Europe, in addition to her studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music.  Her self-titled debut recording was nominated for a Grammy award in 2009.

A pre-concert festival of musical entertainment will begin at 5:00 p.m. with a diverse line-up of Cleveland-area youth performing arts groups appearing in the hours leading up to the Orchestra’s concert, including the Progressive Arts Alliance All-Stars, Heights Youth Theatre, and Jazz @ The Music Settlement – The Dameron Institute Ensemble.  Like The Cleveland Orchestra, these groups are recipients of grants from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.  “The Star-Spangled Spectacular” brought to you by Cuyahoga Arts & Culture will be hosted by ideastream’s Dee Perry.  The 9:00 p.m. concert will be broadcast live on 90.3 WCPN and WCLV 104.9 FM.
