Richard Kaufman
The second concert in The Cleveland Orchestra’s 2010-11 Celebrity Series, Holiday Movie Magic, takes place at Severance Hall on Wednesday, December 8, at 8 p.m. Grammy Award-winning film, television, and pops conductor Richard Kaufman leads the Orchestra in a concert featuring musical selections from classic holiday movies including Miracle on 34th Street, It’s a Wonderful Life, White Christmas, Holiday Inn, Home Alone, The Polar Express, and more. Well-known photos from the films will be projected above the stage throughout this presentation. Members of the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus, and the Cleveland Orchestra Children’s Chorus will perform with the Orchestra.
In November 2009, Richard Kaufman conducted The Cleveland Orchestra in a sold-out concert of movie music by John Williams that was the opening concert of the Orchestra’s new Celebrity Series. He also conducted the Orchestra in its highly successful “Music from the Movies” concert in May 2009 and led the Blossom Festival Orchestra in “Disney in Concert: Magical Music from the Movies” this past August.
THE CELEBRITY SERIES
Launched as a three-concert series during the 2009-10 season, the Celebrity Series drew sold-out houses for each performance. For the 2010-11 season, a fourth concert was added to offer an even broader range of musical styles, exploring avenues of orchestral music that stretch beyond the borders of the classical world to include movie scores, jazz riffs, Broadway, and the Great American Songbook, and sounds from the world at large.
THE SERIES CONTINUES:
- Thursday, December 16 at 8 p.m.: The Dave Brubeck Quartet performs with the Orchestra in An Evening with Dave Brubeck, celebrating Brubeck’s 90th birthday. Russell Gloyd conducts.
- Friday, April 29 at 8 p.m.: Grammy award-winning jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater appears with the Orchestra in a tribute to the “First Lady of Song,” Ella Fitzgerald. Assistant Conductor Sasha Mäkilä, who joined the Orchestra this fall, leads the concert. Presented in collaboration with Tri-C JazzFest.
