Legendary jazz pianist Dave Brubeck celebrates his 90th birthday with An Evening with Dave Brubeck at Severance Hall on Thursday, December 16, at 8 p.m. The Dave Brubeck Quartet will perform a number of Brubeck favorites with The Cleveland Orchestra, including “Three to Get Ready,” “Blue Rondo à la Turk,” and “Take Five,” which is the ensemble’s signature work, from the platinum-selling album Time Out. In addition to Brubeck, members of the Dave Brubeck Quartet are Bobby Militello, saxophone and flute; Michael Moore, bass; and Randy Jones, drums. Russell Gloyd, who since 1976 has led many symphonic and choral performances with the Dave Brubeck Quartet, will conduct.
Born December 6, 1920, Brubeck has been designated a “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress. Among many other accolades, he was awarded Kennedy Center Honors in 2009. In celebration of Brubeck’s 90th birthday, two separate CD collections have been released: The Definitive Dave Brubeck and Dave Brubeck: Legacy of a Legend. A documentary, In His Own Sweet Way, directed by Bruce Ricker and executive produced by Clint Eastwood, will be shown in December on the TCM cable network and on the BBC network.
The Dave Brubeck Quartet got off to an auspicious start with the release of the popular live album Jazz at Oberlin that it recorded at a 1953 concert in Oberlin College’s Finney Chapel. In 2003, it performed a sold-out concert at Oberlin to mark the 50th anniversary of that landmark album. Dave Brubeck has said, “I always considered Jazz at Oberlin a breakthrough album for the Quartet, because it caught [alto saxophone player Paul] Desmond and me in the early days when we were beginning the concept of ‘jazz goes to college’ as a concert performance.”
Dave Brubeck, as a member of the Dave Brubeck Quartet, first appeared with the “Cleveland Summer Orchestra” in a pops concert at Cleveland Public Auditorium in August 1959. The Dave Brubeck Trio performed with The Cleveland Orchestra at Public Auditorium in June 1969. The ensemble Two Generations of Brubeck (Dave Brubeck and his sons Darius, Chris, and Dan) performed their own concert at Blossom Music Center in June 1974. The same ensemble, renamed The New Brubeck Quartet, performed with The Cleveland Orchestra as part of the Blossom Festival in June 1997, marking Dave Brubeck’s most recent appearance with the Orchestra.
The program is the third concert in The Cleveland Orchestra’s 2010-11 Celebrity Series. A program listing appears at the end of this release.
The Celebrity Series
Launched as a three-concert series during the 2009-10 season, the Celebrity Series drew sold-out houses for each performance. For the 2010-11 season, a fourth concert was added to offer an even broader range of musical styles, exploring avenues of orchestral music that stretch beyond the borders of the classical world to include movie scores, jazz riffs, Broadway, and the Great American Songbook, and sounds from the world at large.
THE SERIES CONTINUES:
- Friday, April 29 at 8 p.m.: Grammy award-winning jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater appears with the Orchestra in a tribute to the “First Lady of Song,” Ella Fitzgerald. Assistant Conductor Sasha Mäkilä, who joined the Orchestra this fall, leads the concert. Presented in collaboration with Tri-C JazzFest.
