The Enchantment Theatre Company joins The Cleveland Orchestra and its new Assistant Conductor, Sasha Mäkilä, for a “Halloween Spooktacular!” on Sunday, October 31, at 2 p.m. at Severance Hall. Audience members are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes to the concert, and there will be a costume contest, with judging beginning at 1:20 p.m.  Family Concert sponsor Giant Eagle will provide free ice cream treats to audience members following the concert.

The event is the Orchestra’s first Family Concert of the 2010-11 season. The seasonal program includes Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor, Fučik’s Entrance of the Gladiators, Gounod’s Funeral March of a Marionette, Grieg’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King” from Peer Gynt, Saint-Saëns’s Danse macabre, Robert Wendel’s Ride of the Headless Horseman, and John Williams’s “Hedwig’s Theme” from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

One-hour Family Concerts are designed for children ages 7 and older and their families, providing an opportunity for families to spend time together while enjoying popular classical music performed by The Cleveland Orchestra in Severance Hall. Fun concert-related activities are available for free throughout the Hall beginning one hour before each performance. Pre-concert activities for the “Halloween Spooktacular!” concert include:

  • Halloween Spooktacular! Costume Contest (Reinberger Chamber Hall; enter from the Smith Lobby, located on the Ground Floor of Severance Hall) – To enter, pick up a number at Reinberger Chamber Hall. Prizes will be awarded in the categories of “most original” and “spookiest” costumes. Judging begins in Reinberger Chamber Hall at 1:20 p.m. (Contestants must be present to win.)
  • Picture Yourself as a Princess or Pirate (Bogomolny-Kozerefski Grand Foyer) – Kids can pose as a princess or pirate behind a life-size cutout. Great photo op!
  • Instrument Discovery with Royalton Music Center (Smith Lobby) – Kids can discover their “inner musician” by trying out orchestral instruments with the assistance of Royalton Music Center staff and students from Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory of Music.
  • Children’s Artwork (Founders Gallery overlooking the Bogomolny-Kozerefski Grand Foyer) – The 2009-10 Cleveland Orchestra’s Visual Art Contest encouraged students to respond to their school field trips through art they created. See the winning artwork in this display of works created by students who attended Cleveland Orchestra Education Concerts during the 2009-10 season.
