The Cleveland Orchestra today announced its 2010-11 Family Concert Series, for children ages 7 and older, and PNC Musical Rainbow Series, for children ages 3 to 6. Both concert series are designed to introduce young people to classical music, and feature performances by Cleveland Orchestra musicians with special guest artists. Subscriptions for both series, as well as single tickets, are now available.
2010-11 Family Series Concerts
Three Family Concerts will take place during the 2010-11 season, in October, January, and April. Led by assistant conductors James Feddeck and Sasha Mäkilä, these concerts will be presented on Sundays at 2:00 p.m. In addition to the performances, the Family Concert Series also includes free, pre-concert activities and post-concert treats. The activities, which begin one hour before each performance, include Instrument Discovery, where children can try various instruments. After each performance, families are invited to enjoy free ice cream compliments of series sponsor Giant Eagle.
On Sunday, October 31, at “Halloween Spooktacular!” families are invited to wear a Halloween costume and join The Cleveland Orchestra and Enchantment Theatre Company for the most deliciously spooky and magical music ever, including The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (Dukas), Danse macabre (Saint-Saëns), Harry Potter movie music, and more. A thrilling, chilling afternoon of Halloween fun at Severance Hall. Led by assistant conductor Sasha Mäkilä.
On Sunday, January 9, 2011, The Cleveland Orchestra, plus Academy Trainees of The Joffrey Ballet and Cleveland School of Dance, bring to life Stravinsky’s The Firebird. See what happens when young Ivan befriends the mystical, magical Firebird in this Russian folktale of good versus evil. Led by assistant conductor James Feddeck.
On Sunday, April 17, 2011, the 2010-11 Family Concert Series concludes as The Cleveland Orchestra reunites with the Magic Circle Mime Company to perform Peter and the Wolf. In a twist on this popular introduction to the orchestra, Peter tries to outwit a fearsome wolf that threatens the orchestra and audiences alike. Prokofiev’s beloved classic becomes an exciting musical and theatrical experience in this unique collaboration with Magic Circle Mime Company. Led by assistant conductor Sasha Mäkilä.
The 2010-11 Cleveland Orchestra Family Concert Series is sponsored by Giant Eagle.
2010-11 PNC Musical Rainbow Series
The Cleveland Orchestra’s PNC Musical Rainbow programs are a fun way for children to learn about instruments of the orchestra, one at a time. Energetic host Maryann Nagel leads singing, clapping, and moving to the music while Cleveland Orchestra musicians and guests perform short solo selections and kid-friendly tunes, and demonstrate their instruments.
Heavenly Harps will be presented on October 29 and 30, with principal harp Trina Struble and guest harpist Jody Guinn. Funtastic Flute will be presented on November 19 and 20, with guest flutist George Pope. Piano Pals will be presented on January 14 and 15, 2011, with principal keyboardist Joela Jones (featuring, for the first time ever, an introduction to the Norton Memorial Organ). Chillin’ Cello will be presented on April 29 and 30, 2011, with cellist Martha Baldwin. Triumphant Trumpet will be presented on May 13 and 14, 2011, with trumpet player Jack Sutte.
In addition to the five-concert PNC Musical Rainbow Series, the 2010-11 season also includes three special PNC Holiday Musical Rainbow programs. Each program focuses on the music, culture, and traditions of the holidays. The Music of Chanukah will be presented on Saturday, December 4, at 12:30 p.m. and Tuesday, December 7, at 10:00 a.m. Children will love the fun and surprises of the Christmas Brass Quintet on Wednesday, December 15, at 10:00 a.m., and Saturday, December 18, at 11:00 a.m. Audiences can enjoy All About Kwanzaa on Thursday, December 16, at 10:00 a.m. in a program that includes music, songs, and storytelling.
PNC Musical Rainbow Concerts are endowed by the Pysht Fund.
