Single tickets are now on sale for The Cleveland Orchestra’s 2010-11 season, which opens with Music Director Franz Welser-Möst conducting Stravinsky’s groundbreaking Rite of Spring at Severance Hall on September 23 and September 25 and at John Adams High School in Cleveland on September 24. This season’s Severance Hall concerts continue through May 29, 2011.
2010-11 Highlights
This season, The Cleveland Orchestra presents a special focus on the music of Anton Bruckner, the famed Austrian composer whose music Franz Welser-Möst has championed through live performances, telecasts, and DVD recordings. Following the Orchestra’s four DVDs of Bruckner symphonies (including its most recent recording of the Symphony No. 8 at Severance Hall released in August 2010), the Orchestra will perform these four Bruckner symphonies in concerts across three continents this season, culminating in performances at the Lincoln Center Festival from July 13-17, 2011. Performances at Severance Hall are Symphony No. 7 on September 30 and October 2, and Symphony No. 5 on May 12-14.
During the 2010-11 season, Franz Welser-Möst leads the Orchestra and an international cast headed by the baritone Simon Keenlyside in Don Giovanni, the final installment of the three-season Mozart/Da Ponte opera cycle, with fully staged performances at Severance Hall on March 19, 22, 24, and 27, 2011.
Guest conductors making their Cleveland Orchestra debuts in 2010-11 are Jiří Bĕlohlávek, Andrey Boreyko, Thomas Dausgaard, and Vladimir Jurowski. Other artists debuting this season are sopranos Eva Mei and Jessica Rivera, tenor Shawn Mathey, baritone Reinhard Mayr, and bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni. Violinist Julia Fischer, cellist Alban Gerhardt, and pianists David Fray and Kirill Gerstein will mark their Severance Hall debuts – they have performed with the Orchestra in prior seasons at Blossom Music Center.
Pianist Mitsuko Uchida will perform a solo recital at Severance Hall on Valentine’s Day, Monday, February 14, with Beethoven’s Sonata in E minor, Opus 90, Schumann’s Davidsbündlertänze, Opus 6, and Chopin’s Prelude in C-sharp minor, Opus 45, and Sonata No. 3 in B minor, Opus 58.
The Orchestra will perform four concerts in the Celebrity Series: Michael Feinstein’s The Sinatra Project, Holiday Movie Magic with conductor Richard Kaufman, an evening with Dave Brubeck and his jazz quartet, and jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater.
Grammy-winning sextet eighth blackbird will perform in the Cleveland Orchestra premiere of Jennifer Higdon’s On A Wire on May 27. It will be the final concert of the popular Fridays@7 series, which offers an early (7 p.m.) start time, no intermission, and post-concert party with live world music. eighth blackbird will conclude the Severance Hall season on May 29 in an ensemble performance of contemporary music.
The Musically Speaking series returns, using narrators and multimedia programs to immerse listeners in the context of the music on each program, and the Orchestra’s new Artist-in-Residence, Ton Koopman, lends his expertise to BaroqueFest, a series of concerts and events from April 28 to May 8.
Family offerings at Severance Hall include three one-hour Family Concerts with The Cleveland Orchestra, and a choice of five PNC Musical Rainbow concerts for children ages 3 to 6. The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra celebrates its 25th season in the coming year with a world premiere on May 22 conducted by Youth Orchestra music director James Feddeck.
Perennially popular Christmas Concerts by the Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, and guests run from December 10-19. The Vienna Boys Choir (December 15), Burning River Brass (December 22), and PNC Holiday Rainbows complete the holiday offerings.
New Severance PassCard Now Available
The new Severance PassCard, the most flexible package ever offered by The Cleveland Orchestra, provides subscription flexibility by giving patrons the ability to attend up to 10 concerts for just $30 per ticket. The Severance PassCard, priced at $300, gives the pass holder access to the best available seats (boxes excluded) for any Cleveland Orchestra concert during the 2010-11 season at Severance Hall, excluding Celebrity Series and Holiday Festival concerts.
To obtain tickets, Severance PassCard holders call the Ticket Office beginning the Monday before a concert that they would like to attend and ask for the best available seats. This provides patrons who regularly buy individual tickets to selected concerts throughout the season with complete control over their schedule.
Only 500 Severance PassCards will be available for sale. The purchase deadline is Monday, November 1, 2010. Severance PassCards can be purchased through the Severance Hall Ticket Office by phone at (216) 231-1111 or 800-686-1141, or in person.
Severance Access Series
Introduced a year ago, the Severance Access Series offers five concerts at the deeply discounted price of $99. Local corporations and foundations, led by Forest City Enterprises and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, have subsidized this discount to help the Orchestra attract new and young subscribers. Some limitations on exchange privileges and seating also come with this price. A limited number of Access subscriptions will be available for sale. Access subscriptions can be purchased by calling or visiting the Severance Hall Subscription Office.
The Orchestra offers a variety of money-saving ticket packages. To learn more, visit clevelandorchestra.com.
