Cleveland Orchestra musicians will work with students from elementary school through graduate school in presentations, coachings, workshops, and masterclasses.
Cleveland Orchestra Concerts at the Arsht Center
On April 8 and 9 at 8 p.m., Czech conductor Jiří Bĕlohlávek conducts The Cleveland Orchestra in performances of Haydn’s Symphony No. 96 (“The Miracle”), Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7, and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, with Horacio Gutiérrez as soloist. Mr. Gutiérrez has performed with The Cleveland Orchestra many times since his debut in 1973.
Also on April 8 and 9, The Cleveland Orchestra will open the program with the Allegretto from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, followed by a moment of silence in tribute to those who lost their lives in the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan. In addition, the musicians have organized pre-concert chamber music performances at 7 p.m. in the Arsht Center lobby to raise awareness of the continued need for charitable donations. The Cleveland Orchestra encourages those who want to help to donate to the Red Cross online at www.redcross.org, or to donate $10 by texting REDCROSS to 90999. Gifts to the American Red Cross will support disaster relief efforts to help those affected by the earthquake in Japan and tsunami throughout the Pacific.
On Saturday, April 9, at 2 p.m., The Cleveland Orchestra will perform a Family Concert titled The Composer is Dead at the Arsht Center. The featured piece on the program, titled The Composer Is Dead, is a collaboration by acclaimed composer Nathaniel Stookey and best-selling children’s author Lemony Snicket. The concert will be led by Assistant Conductor James Feddeck and will feature Mr. Stookey as narrator. The Composer Is Dead is a musical whodunit – a Peter & The Wolf for the 21st Century – designed to introduce children to the orchestra and classical music. These Cleveland Orchestra performances are presented by the Musical Arts Association of Miami and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County.
Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency educational and community
collaboration programs in the Miami-Dade community
The Orchestra’s Miami Residency continues to develop through expanded education and community programs that serve thousands in the Miami-Dade area. The Cleveland Orchestra’s residency activities in Miami were conceived and made possible with the leadership of the Musical Arts Association of Miami, the Miami-based support organization dedicated to fundraising for the Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency.
In April, the Orchestra will present a wide array of education and community programs, including two Education Concerts, a “C” You At The Orchestra: Cello, Composer, and Conductor program at Coconut Grove Cares The Barnyard; a book reading and signing by composer Nathaniel Stookey at Books & Books in Coral Gables along with a hands-on Instrument Discovery area in partnership with Allegro Musica Horn Clinic Day at All County Music in Tamarac, and a number of masterclasses and coachings at the University of Miami Frost School of Music with Cleveland Orchestra musicians.
Nearly 4,000 students from Miami-area schools will attend two Cleveland Orchestra Education Concerts on April 7 at the Arsht Center. The Education Concert programs will be the same The Composer Is Dead program led by Assistant Conductor James Feddeck, as described above.
Schools that attend Cleveland Orchestra Education Concerts receive a variety of repertoire-specific curriculum materials to help prepare students for their Cleveland Orchestra concert experience including a CD of the concert music for instructional use, including teacher Guides, and copies of The Score student newspaper. In March, thirty teachers from Miami-Dade County Public Schools whose students will be attending a Cleveland Orchestra Education Concert at the Arsht Center participated in training workshops and attended a Cleveland Orchestra open rehearsal in March 2011 to help them prepare their students for the concert.
The Orchestra will present a number of events in partnership with Coconut Grove Cares The Barnyard after-school program, Books & Books, and All County Music, including:
- “C” You at the Orchestra: Cello, Composer, Conductor program about the inner workings of an orchestra by cellist Brian Thornton for children at the Coconut Cares Barnyard After School Program. The presentation is in preparation for their field trip to The Cleveland Orchestra’s Family Concert (The Composer Is Dead) at the Arsht Center on April 9.
- Composer Nathaniel Stookey will read and sign copies of The Composer Is Dead at Books & Books Bookstore in Coral Gables on April 7. Children will also have the opportunity to ‘discover their inner musician’ by trying out string, woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments supplied by Miami-based Allegro Music in the Instrument Discovery area.
- Horn Clinic Day for horn students with Richard King and Jesse McCormick at All County Music in Tamarac in partnership with Conn-Selmer, Inc., on April 9.
The Orchestra’s ongoing collaborations with the University of Miami Frost School of Music include:
- Recital and masterclass by Henry Peyrebrune, bass, on April 5.
