in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8 at Severance Hall

Music Director Franz Welser-Möst conducts The Cleveland Orchestra in concerts featuring Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8 in F major, Opus 93, at Severance Hall on Thursday, May 19, at 8 p.m.; Friday, May 20, at 11 a.m.; and Saturday, May 21, at 8 p.m. On Thursday and Saturday evenings, pianist Emanuel Ax will perform as soloist in Haydn’s Piano Concerto in D major and Stravinsky’s Capriccio (for piano and orchestra). The concerts begin with John Adams’s Guide to Strange Places. For the Friday morning concert, which is performed without intermission, the program consists of the works by Adams, Haydn, and Beethoven.
Emanuel Ax has appeared with The Cleveland Orchestra in more than 45 concerts since making his debut with the Orchestra in 1976, including a cycle of the Beethoven Piano Concertos, the world premiere performances of John Adams’s piano concerto titled Century Rolls (written for Mr. Ax and The Cleveland Orchestra), and concerts at Carnegie Hall and the Tanglewood Festival. He also has performed four times in recital at Severance Hall. Mr. Ax’s most recent appearances with the Orchestra were in October 2008, under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst.
FREE CONCERT PREVIEWS
Rose Breckenridge, Cleveland Orchestra Music Study Groups administrator and lecturer, will give Concert Previews titled “Make New Friends, Keep the Old” on May 19 and 21 at 7 p.m. in Reinberger Chamber Hall and on May 20 at 10 a.m. in the Concert Hall. This series is funded by a generous endowment gift from Dorothy Humel Hovorka.

Ticket Office: The Severance Hall Ticket Office is located in the Smith Lobby. The entrance and 15-minute Ticket Service parking are along East Boulevard. The Ticket Office is open 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Monday-Friday and on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Closed Sundays and holidays, except for those days with performances, when the Ticket Office opens 3 hours before concert start time.
