CLEVELAND – Single tickets go on sale Sunday, August 28, online at clevelandorchestra.com for The Cleveland Orchestra’s 2011-12 season. The season opens with Music Director Franz Welser-Möst leading concerts on September 29 and 30, and a Gala benefit concert celebrating the launch of Franz’s tenth season on Saturday, October 1, featuring two Cleveland Orchestra principal musicians as soloists. The season continues at Severance Hall through June 2, 2012.
Season Highlights
The 2011-12 highlights include opera-in-concert performances of Richard Strauss’s Salome with Swedish soprano Nina Stemme at Severance Hall and Carnegie Hall and three weeks of Brahms programs featuring masterworks including the Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 with pianist Yefim Bronfman and the Violin Concerto with Georgian violinist Lisa Batiashvili. Sean Shepherd, the Daniel R. Lewis Young Composer Fellow, begins his two-year tenure with the 2011-12 season.
A wide range of repertoire, from the Baroque era up through the present day, includes Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 1; Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 and Violin Concerto; Richard Strauss’s Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks; Mozart’s Piano Concertos Nos. 9, 17 and 21, Symphony No. 39, and Mass in C minor; Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite; Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto; Beethoven’s Symphonies Nos. 6 and 9; Verdi’s Requiem Mass; and Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho’s Laterna Magica and Orion.
Debuts
Guest conductors making their Cleveland Orchestra debuts in the 2011-12 season: Marin Alsop, Marek Janowski, and Fabio Luisi. Other artists debuting this season include pianist Gabriela Montero; violinist Arabella Steinbacher; sopranos Julia Lezhneva, Meagan Miller, and Nina Stemme; tenors Eric Cutler, Dimitri Pittas, and Rudolf Schasching; and bass Iain Paterson. Conductor Lionel Bringuier, violinist Lisa Batiashvili, and soprano Teresa Wakim will make their Severance Hall debuts. (They have performed with the Orchestra at Blossom Music Center.)
Returning Artists
Conductors making return appearances this season: Music Director Laureate Christoph von Dohnányi; Director of Choruses Robert Porco; New York Philharmonic Music Director Alan Gilbert; Principal Guest Conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency Giancarlo Guerrero; Artist-in-Residence Ton Koopman; and former Musical Advisor of The Cleveland Orchestra Pierre Boulez. Returning soloists include Raymond Aceto, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Jonathan Biss, Christine Brewer, Yefim Bronfman, Michelle DeYoung, Ruben Drole, Malin Hartelius, Jane Henschel, Lang Lang, Martin Mitterrutzner, Eric Owens, Garrett Sorenson, Alisa Weilerstein, and Nicolaj Znaider.
Celebrity Series Announced
The Celebrity Series featuring The Cleveland Orchestra and guest artists performing popular, film, and jazz music includes four programs, each at 8 p.m.:
Saturday, December 3
Singer-songwriter Randy Newman, known for his scores for such films as Toy Story and hit singles such as “Short People,” performs with The Cleveland Orchestra.
Tuesday, December 20
The Colors of Christmas, featuring vocalists Peabo Bryson, Jennifer Holiday, Lea Salonga, and Ben Vereen performing Christmas and holiday favorites with the Orchestra.
Saturday, March 31
Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights, a timeless romantic comedy, shown on a large screen with the film score performed live by The Cleveland Orchestra, guest-conducted by William Eddins.
Tuesday, April 10
Jazz guitarist and vocalist John Pizzarelli and The Cleveland Orchestra pay tribute to Nat “King” Cole with favorites from the Great American Songbook.
Family Concert Series
Designed for young people age seven and older and their families, Family Concerts are each based around an entertaining theme, with pre-concert activities beginning one hour before each concert.

PNC Musical Rainbow Series
PNC Musical Rainbow programs are 30-minute programs for young people ages 3 to 6 and their families, designed as a fun way for children to learn about instruments of the orchestra, one at a time. Host Maryann Nagel leads singing, clapping, and moving to the music while musicians from The Cleveland Orchestra and guests perform short solo selections and kid-friendly tunes, and demonstrate their instrument. Each program is performed once on Friday morning and twice on Saturday morning.

Severance PassCard
The Severance PassCard provides patrons with ultimate subscription flexibility. For just $300, patrons receive 10 admissions to any 2011-12 Cleveland Orchestra subscription concert (through June 2, 2012). The Severance PassCard allows patrons to create their own series of Cleveland Orchestra concerts at Severance Hall. To use the card, patrons call the Ticket Office beginning the Monday before any Cleveland Orchestra subscription concert to request access to the best available seats (box seats excluded). Severance PassCards will only be available while supplies last.
