in program featuring the Brahms Violin Concerto
with Lisa Batiashvili as soloist on
January 12, 13, and 14 at Severance Hall

Concerts begin three-week mini-festival featuring the three solo concertos of Johannes Brahms

Violinist Lisa Batiashvili, who was originally scheduled to perform at this weekend’s concerts, has regretfully been obliged to cancel her Cleveland appearance due to illness.  Julian Rachlin has kindly agreed to replace Ms. Batiashvili for these performances.  Mr. Rachlin is making his Cleveland Orchestra debut.

Franz Welser-Möst conducts The Cleveland Orchestra in Severance Hall concerts featuring Brahms’s Violin Concerto in D major, Opus 77, with Lisa Batiashvili as soloist. The program for the evening concerts also includes Kaija Saariaho’s Orion and three of the symphonic poems from Bedřich Smetana’s Má Vlast (“My Homeland”), including The Moldau, the most famous of the six pieces in the cycle. For the Friday morning concert, which is performed without intermission, the program will consist of the works by Brahms and Saariaho.

These concerts begin a three-week presentation of the three solo concertos of Johannes Brahms, with violinist Lisa Batiashvili and pianist Yefim Bronfman. This mini-festival features the Violin Concerto and both Piano Concertos, and concludes with a recital of Brahms chamber music performed by Mr. Bronfman and members of The Cleveland Orchestra on Sunday, February 5.

Violinist Lisa Batiashvili made her Cleveland Orchestra debut at the Blossom Festival in August 2000, as soloist in the Beethoven Violin Concerto. These concerts mark her Severance Hall debut.

FREE CONCERT PREVIEWS

Beginning one hour prior to the concerts on January 12 and 14, a Concert Preview titled “Beloved Favorites” will be given in Reinberger Chamber Hall by Rose Breckenridge, Cleveland Orchestra Music Study Groups administrator and lecturer. Beginning one hour prior to the Friday Morning Concert on January 13, Ms. Breckenridge will give the Concert Preview talk in the Concert Hall. This series is funded by a generous endowment gift from Dorothy Humel Hovorka.

The Severance Hall Ticket Office is located in the Smith Lobby. The entrance and 15-minute Ticket Service parking are along East Boulevard. The Ticket Office is open 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., Monday-Friday, and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. The office is closed Sundays and holidays, except for those days with performances, when it opens 3 hours before concert start time.
