News Release
The Cleveland Orchestra announces conductor,
program change for concerts on February 11, 12, and 13
Release date: February 3, 2010
German conductor Jun Märkl will make his Cleveland Orchestra debut, and the Orchestra will perform works by Debussy and Liszt in place of Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony at its February 11, 12, and 13 Severance Hall concerts. He replaces Vladimir Jurowski, who, due to illness and upon the advice of his physician not to travel, regrets having to cancel his appearances with the Orchestra next week. The first half of the program remains the same, with violinist Leonidas Kavakos featured in the Sibelius Violin Concerto. Revised calendar listings are provided at the end of this news release.
Jun Märkl is conductor and artistic director of the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony, and the 2010-11 season marks his sixth and final season as music director of the Orchestre National de Lyon. Highlights of his tenure in Lyon include an acclaimed Debussy cycle recorded for Naxos. Classic FM Magazine writes, “In Jun Märkl’s expert hands one can immediately sense Debussy using orchestration as a means of articulating each work’s form ... he magically evokes iridescent textures from which points of sound emerge like piquant sources of light on a canvas.”
These concerts are sponsored by The Plain Dealer, a Cleveland Orchestra Partner in Excellence.
