“MUSICALLY SPEAKING – BEYOND THE SCORE®” CONCERT
The Sunday afternoon concert is the second in this season’s “Musically Speaking” series of Cleveland Orchestra performances with a fresh perspective on classical music for both new and experienced listeners. Sunday’s concert, which focuses on one work, Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5, employs the format of Beyond the Score®, a series created by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
For a video about the multi-media Beyond the Score® program format, click here.
Designed not only for classical music aficionados, but also for newcomers looking to delve deeper into the world of classical music, the first half of each Beyond the Score® program offers a multi-media examination of the selected score – its context in history, how it fits into the composer’s output of works, and the details of the composer’s life that influenced its creation. As written and created by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s creative director, Gerard McBurney, Beyond the Score® shares the illuminating stories found inside the music, through narrative and video, calling on the orchestra to provide live musical examples that illustrate the structure of each composition.
Cleveland Orchestra Assistant Conductor Sasha Mäkilä will lead the multi-media examination of Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 on the first half of the program. On the second half, the Orchestra will perform the Prokofiev work straight through, conducted by Mr. Boreyko.
The following Northeast Ohio actors appear in the first half of the program:
- Robert Hawkes (Narrator and Historian) has performed at the Beck Center for the Arts, Dobama Theatre, Ensemble Theatre, the Cleveland and Ohio Shakespeare Festivals, and convergence-continuum, among many other local companies and venues.
- Brian Pedaci (Sergei Prokofiev) has appeared with the Bad Epitaph Theater Company, Cleveland Shakespeare Festival, Dobama Theatre, Great Lakes Theater Company, and The Working Theater.
- Terence Cranendonk (multiple roles of Prokofiev’s father; various friends of Prokofiev; the composers Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Igor Stravinsky, and Aram Khachaturian; the Broadway composer Vernon Duke; the Soviet politician and diplomat Vyacheslav Molotov, Stalin’s second-in-command; the revolutionary, politician, art connoisseur and critic, and journalist Anatoly Lunacharsky; and the Russian/Soviet film director Sergei Eisenstein) has appeared with the Cleveland Play House, Cleveland Public Theatre, and New World Performance Lab.
- Bernadette Clemens (Soviet wartime official and a narrator of Peter and the Wolf) has performed locally at the Beck Center for the Performing Arts, Cleveland Play House, Cleveland Public Theatre, Dobama Theatre, Ensemble Theatre, and the Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival, in addition to her New York theater credits. She is Leadership Development Officer for The Cleveland Orchestra.
- John Simmons (Prokofiev at the piano) is a member of the faculty at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he serves as coach of the CIM Opera Theater.
Terence Cranendonk appeared with The Cleveland Orchestra in Musically Speaking concerts in November 2009 and January 2010. The other performers will be making their Cleveland Orchestra debuts with this concert.
The third and final “Musically Speaking” concert of the 2010-11 season (“Haydn and C.P.E. Bach”) will take place on Sunday, May 8, 2011.
