Cleveland Orchestra announces
Miami Residency activities in March

Cleveland Orchestra to perform Education Concert at Miami Edison Senior High School on March 4

Ongoing Residency activities and partnerships include Miami-Dade County Public Schools,
Coconut Grove Cares The Barnyard, University of Miami

Release date: February 28, 2011

The Cleveland Orchestra announces that its Miami Residency in March 2011 will include subscription concerts at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County on March 4 and 5, as well as educational programs for students, including bringing the full orchestra to Miami Edison Senior High School on March 4.

Cleveland Orchestra Concerts at the Arsht Center

Giancarlo Guerrero, music director of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, will lead The Cleveland Orchestra on Thursday, March 3, at 7:30 p.m., at the Adrienne Arsht Center in “Boléro with a Twist,” featuring Ravel’s Boléro.  The program also includes Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture, a Suite from Bizet’s Carmen, and Sarasate’s Gypsy Airs, with violinist Augustin Hadelich as soloist.  Mr. Hadelich’s performances with The Cleveland Orchestra mark his Miami debut.

On March 4 and 5 at 8 p.m., Mr. Guerrero will conduct The Cleveland Orchestra performing Kabalevsky’s Overture to Colas Breugnon, Elgar’s Enigma Variations, Ravel’s Boléro, and Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, with Mr. Hadelich as soloist.

A Washington Post review of a recent performance by Augustin Hadelich commented, “Hadelich is in touch with the sunny side of the violin. He can dig in; he can probe it; he can make the instrument bark when the music calls for it. But his default seems to be the warm, lyrical joy of lilting melody.”

These Cleveland Orchestra performances are presented by the Musical Arts Association of Miami and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County.

Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency educational and community collaboration programs in the Miami-Dade community

The Orchestra’s Miami Residency continues to develop through expanded education and community programs that serve thousands in the Miami-Dade area.  The Cleveland Orchestra’s residency activities in Miami were conceived and made possible with the leadership of the Musical Arts Association of Miami, the Miami-based support organization dedicated to fundraising for the Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency.

In March, the Orchestra will present a wide array of education and community programs, including an in-school Education Concert; Learning Through Music and Musical Rainbow programs at local schools; and numerous coachings and masterclasses at the University of Miami Frost School of Music, including events with violinist Augustin Hadelich and many Cleveland Orchestra musicians.

The Cleveland Orchestra, led by Giancarlo Guerrero, will perform an Education Concert at Miami Edison Senior High School on March 4.  The program features Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture, a suite from Bizet’s Carmen, and Ravel’s Boléro.  Keoshia Sagaille, a student at Miami Edison Senior High School, will make her Cleveland Orchestra debut performing “The Star-Spangled Banner” to open the program.

The Orchestra will present a number of events in partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Coconut Grove Cares The Barnyard after-school program, New World School of the Arts, and Miami-Dade County elementary schools, including:

  • A coaching session with New World School of the Arts orchestra students led by assistant conductor Sasha Mäkilä on March 1.
  • A program titled “Sensational Strings” at Coconut Grove Cares The Barnyard on March 1, with Cleveland Orchestra violinist Alexandra Preucil Dolan and cellist David Alan Harrell.

The Orchestra’s ongoing collaborations with the University of Miami Frost School of Music include:

  • Open rehearsal at the Arsht Center on March 1, including Frost School of Music students, New World Symphony fellows, as well as music students from Florida International University and New World School of the Arts.  Also attending will be thirty teachers from Miami-Dade County Public Schools, who are participating in training workshops in preparation for their students to attend Cleveland Orchestra Education Concerts at the Arsht Center in April.
  • Violin masterclass with Augustin Hadelich at the University of Miami Frost School of Music on March 2.
  • Horn masterclass with Hans Clebsch at the University of Miami Frost School of Music on March 2.
  • Oboe masterclass with Jeff Rathbun at the University of Miami Frost School of Music on March 2.
  • New Music Reading Workshop with Cleveland Orchestra musicians Joela Jones, Richard Weiss, and Peter Otto, at the University of Miami Frost School of Music on March 4.

In addition, The Cleveland Orchestra is collaborating with Music Reach, a program run by Arts for Learning, in partnership with the Greater Miami Youth Symphony (GMYS), and the University of Miami Frost School of Music to bring thirty students and mentors from the GMYS and Frost School of Music to the Orchestra’s performance at the Arsht Center on March 4.  For many of the GMYS musicians, it will be their first opportunity to attend a live professional orchestral concert.

Support for the Miami Residency is provided by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, and the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.  The 2011 Miami Residency sponsors are Feldman Gale, the John S. and James L.
