German violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann has toured in Europe, the United States, Japan, Australia, and South America, appearing with the world’s leading orchestras and in recital. He has performed regularly with The Cleveland Orchestra, at Severance Hall and Blossom Music Center, and also on tour in Europe, since making his debut with the ensemble in January 1987. Among a varied repertoire of concertos, he was soloist in the U.S. premiere of Matthias Pintscher’s violin concerto, en sourdine, in May 2003 (following his performance in the world premiere of the work with the Berlin Philharmonic in February 2003). His most recent appearances with the Orchestra were in October 2006, as soloist in the Brahms Violin Concerto under Franz Welser-Möst’s direction.
A BBC Music review of Mr. Zimmermann’s Sony recording of Szymanowski’s Violin Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 notes, “… it takes a special soloist to soar with the effortless virtuosity Szymanowski demands. Frank Peter Zimmermann is just that, as anyone who heard him at the 2006 Proms in the First Concerto with [Simon] Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic will know.”
