Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 surrounded
by global celebration on The Cleveland Orchestra’s
Fridays@7 series April 1 at Severance Hall

Acclaimed Czech conductor Jiří Bělohlávek leads Cuban-born keyboard master Horacio Gutiérrez in Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 on The Cleveland Orchestra’s Friday@7 concert at Severance Hall on April 1, 2011. Mr. Bĕlohlávek also leads Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7 for the orchestral portion of the evening, which is performed without intermission.

The chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Bĕlohlávek studied at the Prague Conservatoire and Arts Academy and has recorded extensively for Chandos Records.

Mr. Gutiérrez has performed concertos of Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, and others during previous appearances with The Cleveland Orchestra. He has made a Grammy-nominated recording of Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto, an enduringly popular work.

6 p.m. — The string quartet Sweet Plantain (Eddie Venegas, violin and trombone; Joe Deninzon, violin; Orlando Wells, viola; David Gotay, cello) performs Latin jazz in Severance Hall’s Reinberger Chamber Hall.

7 p.m. — The Cleveland Orchestra performs Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7.

8:15 p.m. Passport Project Global Dance & Music Collective  performs in the Bogomolny-Kozerefski Grand Foyer. Then, performances in the Concert Hall by the Leo Blanco South American Jazz Quartet (Farouk Gomati, percussion; Dean Johnston, drums; Will Slater, bass; Leo Blanco, piano/composer) and by Sweet Plantain, featuring a world premiere of a work written for Sweet Plantain by Leo Blanco.

May 27 — The final Fridays@7 concert in the 2010-11 series features The Cleveland Orchestra with Music Director Franz Welser-Möst and an after-party with bluegrass band Wayfaring Strangers.
