CLEVELAND – The Cleveland Orchestra and the Cleveland Museum of Art collaborate in Italian Masterworks, a first-of-a-kind partnertship to present music that complements paintings in the permanent collection of the museum. The Cleveland Museum of Art’s collection of European painting from 1500 to 1800 is one of international importance with a particular depth in Italian Baroque works, including Caravaggio’s The Crucifixion of Saint Andrew. Music from four centuries will be performed on three distinct programs, in conjunction with pre-concert talks discussing Italian art and artists.

Cleveland Orchestra Assistant Conductor James Feddeck will lead two Cleveland Orchestra concerts at the museum’s Gartner Auditorium. A third concert of Italian chamber music will include members of The Cleveland Orchestra and a special guest performance by the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble conducted by Timothy Weiss. The performances will incorporate instruments from the museum’s keyboard collection.

In a creative marriage of the visual arts and orchestral music, performances at the museum include pre-concert talks. Museum Director David Franklin, Deputy Director and Chief Curator C. Griffith Mann, and Curator Jon Seydl will speak about masterpieces of Italian art from the Cleveland Museum of Art’s collection.

“The collaboration with the distinguished Cleveland Museum of Art is a significant step toward our goal of increasing artistic collaborations of the highest quality right here in Northeast Ohio,” said the Orchestra’s executive director, Gary Hanson.

David Franklin said, “The Cleveland Orchestra concerts at the museum will enhance our exploration and understanding of the museum’s collection. This unique partnership enables both of our institutions to welcome new audiences and perspectives.”

KEITHLEY FUND FOR ARTISTIC COLLABORATION

The Cleveland Orchestra has announced a gift from Joseph P. Keithley and Nancy F. Keithley of $1 million to support the Orchestra’s artistic collaboration in Northeast Ohio. “We applaud The Cleveland Orchestra’s commitment to artistic collaboration and believe that such partnerships not only strengthen the Orchestra and their partners, but also strengthen the community,” said Nancy Keithley, a Trustee of The Cleveland Orchestra.

The Keithley Fund for Artistic Collaboration will support The Cleveland Orchestra’s collaborations with other major institutions in Northeast Ohio. The gift will provide short-term funding for annual artistic collaboration, and provide a portion of endowment funding for The Cleveland Orchestra’s long-term goal of fully endowing artistic collaboration.

The Keithley Fund helps to finance the partner presentation of The Cleveland Orchestra and the Cleveland Museum of Art. “We are especially pleased in the first year to support the Orchestra’s upcoming performances at the museum’s Gartner Auditorium. Bringing together these two world-class institutions is very meaningful to us personally and we look forward to celebrating the launch in May,” said Joseph Keithley.

Joseph and Nancy Keithley are supporters of the museum's building transformation project. Nancy Keithley is a Trustee of the Cleveland Museum of Art.

The Cleveland Orchestra continues to expand its activities with Northeast Ohio institutions in order to reach new audiences and serve more of the community. In recent seasons, the Orchestra has artistically collaborated with multiple Northeast Ohio arts organizations including:

  • the participation of Verb Ballets in the Orchestra’s current production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni,
  • presentations of chamber music and dance with the Cleveland Play House and GroundWorks DanceTheater,
  • a contemporary chamber music performance at MOCA (the Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland),
  • and a ballet suite including dancers from the Cleveland School of Dance.

“The Keithleys' gift helps to make it possible for the Orchestra to add programs to welcome new audiences and forge partnerships in our community. We are grateful they share our vision to create a significant endowment for these important projects,” said Gary Hanson.

Baroque and Beyond Festival

The collaborative programs with the Cleveland Museum of Art’s "VIVA! & Gala" Performing Arts series are part of a Baroque and Beyond Festival that also includes Cleveland Orchestra performances at Severance Hall, a masterclass by Cleveland Orchestra Artist-in-Residence Ton Koopman at the Cleveland Museum of Art, and Mr. Koopman’s solo keyboard recital at Case Western Reserve University’s Harkness Chapel.
