News Release

Blossom Festival

Release date: May 31, 2011

Franz Welser-Möst leads The Cleveland Orchestra
in music of Bruckner and Adams, July 9 and 10

Saturday, July 9, at 8 p.m

Franz Welser-Möst

Music Director Franz Welser-Möst leads The Cleveland Orchestra in Bruckner’s Symphony No. 8, which the Orchestra recently released as a DVD recording to be featured in a Cleveland telecast in June.

The Orchestra and Franz Welser-Möst will perform Bruckner’s Eighth Symphony in July at the Lincoln Center Festival in New York, along with Bruckner’s Symphonies Nos. 5, 7, and 9.  The summer performances complete a year-long series of concerts, during which the Orchestra and Franz Welser-Möst will have performed Bruckner symphonies 17 times, in Japan, South Korea, Ohio, Scotland, Switzerland, and New York.

On the Orchestra’s European tour last season, the Kleine Zeitung wrote that “Franz Welser-Möst performed Anton Bruckner’s music the way the composer wanted it performed.”  Together, they have released DVDs and recordings of Bruckner’s Fifth, Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth Symphonies made in historic venues such as Vienna’s Musikverein and the Abbey of St. Florian near Linz, Austria, adding to the Orchestra’s legacy of Bruckner recordings.

Tickets $19 to $83.

Sunday, July 10, at 7 p.m.

Violinist Leila Josefowicz, whom the Los Angeles Times has called “an impassioned advocate for contemporary music, particularly Adams’ works,” returns to perform the Violin Concerto of American composer John Adams.  Music Director Franz Welser-Möst leads The Cleveland Orchestra in the Adams Concerto and in Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9.  Both works are part of the repertoire of music by Bruckner and Adams for a four-program series of concerts that the Orchestra will perform at the Lincoln Center Festival in the week following this Blossom Festival concert.  Click here for videos of Franz Welser-Möst and John Adams speaking about Bruckner and Adams.

Tickets $19 to $83.
