Marin Alsop, music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, makes her debut with The Cleveland Orchestra at concerts on December 8-10, in programs featuring Leonard Bernstein’s Serenade (after Plato’s “Symposium”), with Cleveland Orchestra First Associate Concertmaster Peter Otto as soloist, and Camille Saint-Saëns’s Symphony No. 3 (“Organ”), with Cleveland Orchestra Principal Keyboardist Joela Jones as soloist.  The December 8 and 10 concerts begin with Samuel Barber’s Symphony No. 1.

In September 2007, when Marin Alsop began her tenure as music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, she became the first woman to hold that position with a major American orchestra. Two years earlier, in 2005, she was named a MacArthur Fellow, the first and only conductor ever to receive this prestigious award. Ms. Alsop has been music director of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in Santa Cruz, California, since 1992.  For the 2011-12 season, she is serving as an artist in residence at the Southbank Centre in London, England.  Concurrently with her post in Baltimore, she will become music director of the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra with the 2012-13 season.

Friday, December 9, at 7 p.m.:  KeyBank Fridays@7 concert + after-party

Marin Alsop, music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, leads The Cleveland Orchestra in Bernstein’s Serenade (after Plato’s “Symposium”) and the Saint-Saëns Symphony No. 3 (“Organ”).

This is the second concert in The Cleveland Orchestra’s 2011-12 KeyBank Fridays@7 series. The Fridays@7 series was launched during the 2009-10 season.  Returning for its third season, and with a new sponsor, the KeyBank Fridays@7 series features an early start time, no intermission, and an after-party following each concert.  KeyBank Fridays@7 concerts are less formal, onstage and off.  Following each 7 p.m. Cleveland Orchestra concert, world music expert Jamey Haddad invites a selection of artists to collaborate in a unique musical celebration.  Additional Fridays@7 concerts in the series this season are on March 16 and May 11.

Prior to the Orchestra’s KeyBank Fridays@7 concert on December 9, Israeli jazz pianist Alon Yavnai, performs in Reinberger Chamber Hall.  Following the concert, Greek pianist/accordionist, vocalist, and songwriter Magda Giannikou and her band, Banda Magda, perform in the Bogomolny-Kozerefski Grand Foyer.  Banda Magda’s debut album is scheduled for release at Christmastime.

FREE CONCERT PREVIEWS

Beginning one hour prior to the concerts on December 8 and 10, a Concert Preview titled “Musical Splendor and Radiance” will be given in Reinberger Chamber Hall by Rabbi Roger Klein of The Temple – Tifereth Israel.  This series is funded by a generous endowment gift from Dorothy Humel Hovorka.

The December 8 and 10 concerts are sponsored by Medical Mutual of Ohio, the exclusive health insurer of The Cleveland Orchestra.

Joela Jones’s solo appearance with The Cleveland Orchestra is made possible by a contribution to the Orchestra’s Guest Artist Fund from Mrs. Paul D. Wurzburger.  Peter Otto’s solo appearance with The Cleveland Orchestra is made possible by a contribution to the Orchestra’s Guest Artist Fund from Mrs. Warren H. Corning.

The KeyBank Fridays@7 Series is sponsored by KeyBank, a Cleveland Orchestra Partner in Excellence, and is also made possible in part through the generous support of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
