News Release

The Cleveland Orchestra to perform “American Journey”
education program at the Cleveland School of the Arts
on November 16

Release date: November 15, 2011

CLEVELAND – As part of its education and community programs, The Cleveland Orchestra will perform an Education Concert at the Cleveland School of the Arts on Wednesday, November 16, at 1 p.m.  The entire student body will attend the concert, to be held in the school’s auditorium.  Assistant Conductor Sasha Mäkilä will conduct The Cleveland Orchestra in a program titled “American Journey” that traces the settlement of America through music, including Aaron Copland’s “Simple Gifts” from Appalachian Spring, two movements from Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 (“From the New World”), Lucas Richman’s A Western Fanfare, and Samuel Ward’s America the Beautiful.  Cleveland actor and director Scott Plate will serve as host and narrator.  For the complete program, see the calendar listing that follows this release.

The Cleveland Orchestra’s education and community programs aim to bring orchestral music to more people in Northeast Ohio than ever before.  Its innovative programs are designed to broaden and deepen the Orchestra’s connection with the Cleveland community – and the community’s connection with classical music – for people of all ages.

Education Concerts for schools are supported by grants from Conn-Selmer Inc., the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation, The Max Ratner Education Fund, the William N. Skirball Endowment for Education Programs, and by gifts from many other generous donors.
