The Cleveland Orchestra presents the opening concert in its 2011-12 Family Concert Series – the second annual “Halloween Spooktacular!” Concert – at Severance Hall on Sunday, October 30, at 2 p.m. The concert features the Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra, under the direction of Carl Topilow, performing a program that includes Dukas’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Saint-Saëns’s Danse Macabre, music by John Williams, and Russell Peck’s The Chill of the Orchestra. For a complete program listing for the concert, see the calendar that follows this release.
Family Concert sponsor Giant Eagle will provide free treats to audience members following the performance.
The Cleveland Orchestra, which will be on tour in Europe from October 20 through November 5, will perform the remaining three Family Concerts in the 2011-12 series, on December 2, 2011, and April 1 and May 6, 2012.
One-hour Family Concerts are designed for children ages 7 and older and their families, providing an opportunity for families to spend time together while enjoying popular classical music performed in Severance Hall. Fun, concert-related activities are available for free in various parts of the Hall, beginning one hour before each concert. Pre-concert activities for the “Halloween Spooktacular” concert include:
- Halloween Spooktacular! Costume Contest (Reinberger Chamber Hall; enter from the Smith Lobby, located on the Ground Floor of Severance Hall) – To enter, pick up a number at Reinberger Chamber Hall. Prizes will be awarded in the categories of “most original” and “spookiest” costumes. Judging begins in Reinberger Chamber Hall at 1:20 p.m. (Contestants must be present to win.)
- Instrument Discovery with Royalton Music Center (Smith Lobby) – Kids can discover their “inner musician” by trying out orchestral instruments with the assistance of Royalton Music Center staff.
- Picture Yourself as a Princess or Pirate (Bogomolny-Kozerefski Grand Foyer) – Kids can pose as a princess or pirate behind a life-size cutout. Great photo op!
- Children’s Artwork (Lerner Lobby in front of the Cleveland Orchestra Store on the ground floor of Severance Hall) – The Cleveland Orchestra’s Visual Art Contests encourage students to respond to their school field trips through art they create. See the selected artwork in this display of works created by students who attended Cleveland Orchestra Education Concerts from 2007 through 2011.
Family Concerts are sponsored by Giant Eagle.
