Franz Welser-Möst begins his tenth season as Music Director of The Cleveland Orchestra with concerts featuring Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Opus 36, at Severance Hall. The programs begin with Igor Stravinsky’s Concerto in D (for string orchestra), and the Thursday evening concert also includes Andrea Gabrieli’s Missa Brevis and Stravinsky’s Mass. The vocal parts of the Missa Brevis will be performed on two trumpets, horn, and trombone. Movements of the Gabrieli work alternate with the movements of the Stravinsky work. For the Stravinsky Mass, the Cleveland Orchestra Chamber Chorus, prepared by Director of Choruses Robert Porco, will perform with the Orchestra. For the Friday morning concert, which is performed without intermission, the program will consist of Stravinsky’s Concerto in D and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4.
FREE CONCERT PREVIEWS
Beginning one hour prior to the concert on September 29, a Concert Preview titled “Season Preview with Franz Welser-Möst and Gary Hanson” will be given in the Concert Hall. Cleveland Orchestra Executive Director Gary Hanson will converse with Franz Welser-Möst about programming and plans for his tenth season as Music Director of the Orchestra. Prior to the Friday Morning concert on September 30, Rose Breckenridge, Cleveland Orchestra Music Study Groups administrator and lecturer, will give a Concert Preview talk titled “Fire and Ice” in the Concert Hall. This series is funded by a generous endowment gift from Dorothy Humel Hovorka.
The Cleveland Orchestra’s Friday Morning Concert Series is endowed by the Mary E. and F. Joseph Callahan Foundation.
