Franz Welser-Möst conducts The Cleveland Orchestra in Severance Hall concerts featuring Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major, Opus 35, with Nikolaj Znaider as soloist.  The program opens with Carl Maria von Weber’s Overture to Euryanthe, Opus 81, followed by Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Opus 56 (“Scottish”).

Violinist Nikolaj Znaider made his Cleveland Orchestra debut at the Blossom Festival in July 1999, as soloist in the Sibelius Violin Concerto.  In the 2008-09 season, he performed the Brahms Violin Concerto with the Orchestra at Severance Hall and during the Orchestra’s Miami Residency that season.  His most recent appearance with the Orchestra was as soloist in the Beethoven Violin Concerto at Blossom in July 2009, with Franz Welser-Möst conducting.

Friday, October 14, at 7 p.m.:  KeyBank Fridays@7 concert + after-party

Franz Welser-Möst leads The Cleveland Orchestra in a concert featuring Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto with Nikolaj Znaider as soloist.  The program begins with Igor Stravinsky’s Agon ballet music and ends with Maurice Ravel’s Boléro.

This is the first concert in The Cleveland Orchestra’s 2011-12 KeyBank Fridays@7 series.  The Fridays@7 series was launched during the 2009-10 season.  Returning for its third season, and with a new sponsor, the KeyBank Fridays@7 series features an early start time, no intermission, and an after-party following each concert.  KeyBank Fridays@7 concerts are less formal, onstage and off.  Following each Cleveland Orchestra concert, world music expert Jamey Haddad invites a selection of artists to collaborate in a unique musical celebration.  Additional Fridays@7 concerts in the series this season are on December 9, March 16, and May 11.

Prior to the Orchestra’s KeyBank Fridays@7 concert on October 14, The Jazz Unit, an 11-piece Cleveland jazz ensemble, will perform.  Audience members are encouraged to take part in the post-concert Dance Party, which features a PolkaFest in Smith Lobby with the Eddie Rodick Orchestra, a Cleveland Slovenian polka band, and a hoedown in the Bogomolny-Kozerefski Grand Foyer with the Back Porch Swing Band from Zanesville, Ohio, and popular square-dance caller Larry Ward.
