Franz Welser-Möst conducting The Cleveland Orchestra in Severance Hall

Pierre Boulez conducts The Cleveland Orchestra in Severance Hall concerts featuring Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 7 in E minor.  The program begins with three works by Schubert for male chorus and orchestra:  Hymnus an den heiligen Geist (Hymn to the Holy Spirit), D. 964; Nachtgesang im Walde (Night Song in the Forest), D. 913; and Gesang der Geister über den Wassern (Song of the Spirits over the Waters), D. 714.  For the Schubert works, the Orchestra will be joined by Men of the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus.

These concerts begin a two-week engagement with the Orchestra for Mr. Boulez.  The program for his second week of concerts includes Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms and Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with Pierre-Laurent Aimard as soloist.  Pierre Boulez has conducted The Cleveland Orchestra in more than 200 concerts since making his debut with the ensemble in 1965.  Former Music Director George Szell appointed Mr. Boulez to the post of principal guest conductor beginning in 1969.  Following Szell’s death in 1970, Mr. Boulez served also as musical advisor of the Orchestra, from 1970 to 1972.  Mr. Boulez’s recordings with the Orchestra have won five Grammy Awards.  His most recent recordings with the Orchestra are of the Ravel piano concertos with Pierre-Laurent Aimard as soloist, and a DVD recording of Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn with mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená and baritone Christian Gerhaher, plus the Adagio from Mahler’s Symphony No. 10.  For excerpts from this new DVD recording of Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn, click here.
