At the Movies — The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog

Todd Wilson, organ

An annual Halloween favorite! — a horror movie masterpiece of the silent film era, with the musical accompaniment improvised live by acclaimed organist Todd Wilson on Severance Hall’s grand Norton Memorial Organ.

The third feature film by a young Alfred Hitchcock, this silent film is generally acknowledged to be the one where he truly found his distinctive style of suspense, menace, macabre humor, and brilliant, elegant camerawork that assured his place among cinema’s giants. The suspenseful hunt is on for a Jack-the-Ripper-like serial killer in London: the new lodger (Ivor Novello) seems ideal … quiet, humble, and pays a month's rent in advance. But his mysterious and suspicious behavior soon has them wondering if he's the killer terrorizing local blond girls.

Prior to the film, Todd Wilson will be performing three short pieces:

J.S. BACH - Toccata in D minor, BWV 565
DURUFLÉ - Sicilienne from Suite Op. 5
WIDOR - Toccata from Symphony No. 5

The film is presented with one intermission and will end at approximately 10:05 p.m.

The Cleveland Orchestra's At the Movie series is sponsored by PNC Bank.

Please note that The Cleveland Orchestra does not appear on this performance.
