Spring 2014:  At Home in Lakewood

In 2014, The Cleveland Orchestra, in partnership with the community, shined a spotlight on the city of Lakewood and its excellent music education programs with performances and collaborations over a span of four months, culminating in a week of residency Saturday, May 17 through Saturday, May 24. The highlights of this neighborhood residency were three free Orchestra concerts for the community at Lakewood Civic Auditorium — one for the public led by the Orchestra’s Music Director Franz Welser-Möst on Saturday, May 24, at 7:30 p.m., and two for school students.

Related education events, launched in February, included more than a dozen learning opportunities for all ages, including learning experiences for pre-schoolers, high school chorus, band, and orchestra coachings and workshops, and a composition seminar. Cleveland Orchestra musicians will participate in audition training, competition judging, and career panels for young people, and a public discussion of the free community concert program prior to the performance.

During the week of residency in May, musicians performed at restaurants, businesses, and organizations across Lakewood.

PORCHestra, an evening of music on Lakewood’s front porches sponsored by Charter One, took place on Sunday, May 18, beginning at 4 p.m. with Lakewood residents, Cleveland Orchestra musicians, and members of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra performing on Lakewood porches throughout the community. The day  culminated with an outdoor concert at the downtown Lakewood Public Library at 6 p.m.  Prior to the event, volunteers from the Orchestra, Charter One, and the community will repair and paint two front porches chosen by LakewoodAlive.
