First European Tour

The Cleveland Orchestra embarked on its first European tour in 1957 with George Szell at the helm. The United States Department of State sponsored a forty-day tour to twenty-two cities throughout Europe, including stops in Belgium, Germany, England, Spain, Portugal, France, Austria, Poland, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. In all, the Orchestra performed twenty-nine concerts to great acclaim and rave reviews.
