About the Event

The world’s finest young pianists compete for five days beginning at Oberlin Conservatory’s Warner Concert Hall on July 31. The excitement builds as three finalists earn a performance with The Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall—with a $20,000 first prize on the line.

The Thomas and Evon Cooper International Competition at Oberlin Conservatory alternates annually between piano and violin. It is dedicated to presenting an important international competitive opportunity to outstanding young musicians between the ages of 13 and 18. The competition culminates in a final round where the top three competitors perform a full concerto from the standard repertoire with orchestra. Cash prizes total $40,000, including a $20,000 first prize, with additional awards that include full tuition scholarships to Oberlin Conservatory. Laureates of the Cooper Competition for piano have gone on to win major competitions and establish thriving young careers. They include George Li, Yuncham Lim, Bruce Liu, Evren Ozel, Clayton Stephenson, and Tony Siqi Yun. For more information visit: www.oberlin.edu/cooper.
