Composer-conductor John Adams leads a riveting program anchored by two American rarities: Roy Harris’s dynamic Third Symphony and Copland’s deliciously jazzy Piano Concerto, spotlighting the musical wizardry of Conrad Tao. Rounding out the program is Adams’s kaleidoscopic ode to the composer and critic Nicholas Slonimsky and a delightful suite of tunes from Weill’s satirical The Threepenny Opera.
Note: Harris’s Third Symphony will not be performed on Friday’s matinee concert.
A free concert preview lecture with James Wilding, Professor of Theory & Composition at The University of Akron, will take place in Mandel Concert Hall one hour before the performance. Friday’s lecture will be in Mandel Concert Hall.
