As part of the 2027 Mandel Opera & Humanities Festival, Franz Welser-Möst leads a program steeped in ancient mythology. Stravinsky’s musical exploration of the Orpheus myth traces the hero’s journey to the underworld and back with both beauty and restraint. Then, drawing from Finland’s national epic, Sibelius’s Four Legends from the Kalevala weaves tales of love, loss, and transfiguration, including its haunting second movement inspired by the Swan of Tuonela.
